Understanding the Vedic Zodiac
What Is a Rashi?
In Vedic astrology, the zodiac is divided into twelve equal segments called Rashis. Each Rashi spans 30 degrees of the ecliptic and acts as an environment that filters and colors the expression of the planets (Grahas) moving through it.
Unlike a generic sun-sign approach, a Rashi represents a deep, archetypal field of consciousness. Your Moon Rashi (where the Moon was when you were born) is considered the most vital indicator of your mind and emotional nature.
Sidereal Zodiac vs Tropical Zodiac
Vedic astrology relies on the Sidereal (Nirayana) zodiac, which calculates planetary positions against the actual, fixed background of stars. Due to the precession of the equinoxes, the Sidereal zodiac is currently about 24 degrees behind the Tropical (Sayana) zodiac used in the West.
This fundamental difference means that your Vedic Sun and Moon signs are often the preceding sign compared to your Western astrological chart.
