What Is a Vedic Birth Chart?
A Vedic birth chart—often referred to as a Kundli or Janma Kundali—is an exact astronomical map of the sky at the precise moment and location of your birth. It serves as the foundational blueprint for Jyotish (Vedic astrology), allowing an astrologer to analyze your psychological disposition, life path, and karmic timing.
A complete chart is constructed from several interlocking systems that work together to describe human experience:
- The Ascendant (Lagna): The zodiac sign that was rising on the Eastern horizon when you were born. It represents your physical body, identity, and the overarching path of your life.
- The 12 Houses (Bhavas): The chart is divided into 12 sectors, each representing specific areas of life (e.g., career, marriage, wealth). The Ascendant establishes your 1st House.
- The Zodiac Signs (Rashis): The 12 sidereal constellations that color how planetary energies are expressed.
- Planetary Placements (Grahas): The positions of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. Their placements in specific signs and houses dictate the active forces in your life.
- The Nakshatras: The 27 lunar mansions that provide a micro-level psychological view, particularly determined by the exact position of your Moon sign.
What This Calculator Shows
Our free tool calculates the most critical elements of your Vedic chart:
- Your precise Moon Sign and Nakshatra (lunar mansion).
- Your Ascendant and its exact degree.
- The sidereal positions of all major planetary bodies, including whether they were retrograde (appearing to move backward) at the time of your birth.
Why Exact Birth Time Matters
In Jyotish, the Ascendant changes zodiac signs approximately every two hours as the Earth rotates. If your birth time is inaccurate by even a few minutes, it is possible for your Ascendant to shift into an entirely different sign, which completely reorders the 12 houses of your chart.
If you have an unknown or approximate birth time, our calculator safely omits the Ascendant to prevent generating an inaccurate chart layout. You will still receive accurate placements for slower-moving planets (like Jupiter and Saturn) and typically the Moon, which takes about 2.5 days to change signs.
