The fundamental difference between Vedic and Western astrology lies in their coordinate systems. Western astrology uses the Tropical Zodiac, which is tied to Earth’s seasons (the vernal equinox). Over centuries, due to a slow astronomical wobble known as the precession of the equinoxes, the tropical calendar has shifted relative to the actual star constellations.

Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal Zodiac (Nirayana), which is anchored directly to the fixed constellations. When you look through a telescope at where Jupiter or the Moon resides in the sky today, the Sidereal Zodiac matches what you observe.

The angular distance between the Tropical and Sidereal zodiacs is called the Ayanamsa. In modern Vedic astrology, the most widely recognized and authoritative measurement is the Lahiri Ayanamsa (Chitra Paksha), which anchors the zodiac opposite the star Spica (Chitra).

Currently, the Lahiri Ayanamsa offset is approximately 24 degrees. This means your Vedic Sun, Moon, or Ascendant sign is often one sign earlier than your Western tropical placement.

The Ascendant (Lagna) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact minute and geographical location of your birth. In classical Parashari Jyotish, the entire 30-degree sign of the Lagna becomes the 1st House, the next sign becomes the 2nd House, and so forth.

Beneath the 12 zodiac signs lies a deeper, 27-fold subdivision of the heavens known as the Nakshatras. Each Nakshatra spans 13 degrees and 20 minutes of arc and is further divided into 4 quarters called Padas (equaling the 108 sacred cosmic divisions).

Governed by distinct celestial deities and planetary rulers, Nakshatras define the nuanced psychological texture of your chart and determine the starting point of your life's planetary periods.

Perhaps the crowning predictive and timing achievement of Vedic astrology is the Vimshottari Dasha system. Based on the exact degree of your natal Moon at birth, your life unfolds through structured planetary periods (Mahadashas), which are further subdivided into sub-periods (Antardashas).

When a planet's Dasha is active, its natal dignity, house placement, and house rulerships come to the forefront of your daily lived experience.
