What Is a Moon Sign?
Your Moon Sign is the sidereal zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at the time of your birth. In Vedic astrology it is commonly called Chandra Rashi or Janma Rashi—the lunar sign used alongside the Ascendant in many chart readings. The Moon moves through the zodiac much faster than the Sun, so this placement reflects where the Moon was in the sky at your birth moment, not your calendar birth date alone.
Traditionally, Chandra Rashi is associated with emotional responses, habits, inner temperament, instinctive reactions, and mental patterns. It is not a single label that “determines personality”; interpretive texts use it to describe how the mind and feelings are commonly understood in Jyotish. For conceptual background, see Learn: The Moon Sign.
Terminology note: Moon Sign, Chandra Rashi, and Janma Rashi often refer to the same lunar placement in everyday Vedic usage. Rashi by itself simply means zodiac sign, so always check whether the text means Moon, Sun, or Ascendant.
How Our Moon Sign Calculator Works
The tool above is a moon sign calculator: it turns your birth data into a sidereal lunar placement you can use for Rashi, Nakshatra, and next-step chart tools. The process follows these steps:
- Enter your birth date.
- Enter your known birth time, or choose unknown time if you only have an estimate.
- Select your birthplace so local civil time and timezone can be resolved.
- Your local birth moment is converted to the correct instant, including historical timezone and DST where applicable.
- The Moon's astronomical position is calculated for that instant.
- That longitude is mapped to the sidereal zodiac.
- Your Moon Sign (Rashi), Nakshatra, and Pada are returned in the result panel.
The calculator uses Moon Sign's astrology engine to determine the Moon's sidereal position for the resolved birth instant, with Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa as the sidereal reference. That separates astronomical calculation from the interpretive meanings described in traditional Vedic astrology.
Why Birth Time and Place Matter
The Moon changes position continuously. It typically remains within one zodiac sign for roughly a couple of days, so an exact clock time is not always required just to identify your Chandra Rashi—especially when the Moon was well away from a sign boundary on your birth date.
Finer accuracy matters in several situations. Near a boundary between two signs, even a small timing error can shift the Rashi. Nakshatra and especially Pada need more precise timing because each Nakshatra spans only 13°20′. Birthplace is especially useful for resolving local civil time, timezone, and historical offset; for Moon Sign itself, the correctly resolved birth instant is what matters. The same birth details feed fuller birth chart calculations where geographic coordinates matter directly for Ascendant and houses.
Near a boundary? If the Moon was close to changing signs around your birth date, an approximate or unknown birth time may leave uncertainty between two adjacent Rashis. Use the calculator's guidance and, when possible, confirm with a birth certificate or hospital record.
Moon Sign vs Sun Sign vs Ascendant
These three placements answer different questions in a Vedic chart. All are calculated from birth data, but each uses a different celestial reference.
| Placement | Calculated from | Changes roughly | Traditionally associated with |
|---|
| Moon Sign (Chandra Rashi) | Moon's sidereal zodiac position | ~2–3 days per sign | Emotional patterns, instinctive responses, mental habits |
| Sun Sign (Surya Rashi) | Sun's sidereal zodiac position | ~1 month per sign | Vitality, identity themes, core expression |
| Ascendant (Lagna) | Sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth | ~2 hours per sign | Chart orientation, houses, outward presentation |
The Ascendant depends on an accurate birth time and place. To see Lagna with your planets and houses, calculate your full Vedic birth chart. For a focused comparison, see Moon Sign vs Sun Sign and Moon Sign vs Ascendant (Lagna).
Moon Sign and Nakshatra
The sidereal zodiac is divided into twelve Rashis of 30° each. The Nakshatra system divides the same circle into twenty-seven lunar mansions (Nakshatras), each spanning 13°20′, with four Padas (quarters) per Nakshatra. Your Moon's longitude therefore yields both a Rashi and a Nakshatra—and a Pada—for the same birth instant.
Each 30° Rashi contains portions of multiple Nakshatras, while each Nakshatra spans 13°20′ and contains four Padas. Nakshatra boundaries can cross Rashi boundaries, so the two systems are related but not identical slices of the sky. Nakshatra gives a finer-grained lunar classification than Rashi alone.
In the traditional Vimshottari Dasha framework, birth Nakshatra is used to establish the starting sequence and timing of planetary periods—not a full Dasha tutorial, but an important link between your lunar mansion and predictive timing. Explore your birth star with the Nakshatra calculator, or see period timelines in the Vimshottari Dasha tool. Read Moon Sign and Nakshatra explained for a dedicated guide.
Is Moon Sign the Same as Rashi?
In many Indian and Vedic contexts, when someone asks for your “Rashi” they mean your Moon Sign (Janma Rashi). That everyday usage is common—but not the whole story. Rashi literally means zodiac sign, so the prefix or context tells you which body or point is meant:
- Chandra Rashi → Moon Sign
- Surya Rashi → Sun Sign
- Lagna Rashi → Ascendant sign
This moon sign calculator returns Chandra Rashi by birth date, time, and birthplace, along with Nakshatra detail when timing supports it. See Chandra Rashi and Janma Rashi explained.
How Accurate Is This Moon Sign Calculator?
Accuracy starts with correct inputs: birth date, local birth time (or a clear unknown-time choice), and an accurate birthplace for timezone resolution. The engine then computes the Moon's astronomical longitude and maps it to the sidereal zodiac with the configured ayanamsa. Uncertainty near sign boundaries or with unknown time is a timing issue, not a disagreement about what a Moon Sign is.
Calculation accuracy (where was the Moon at your birth instant?) is separate from astrological interpretation (what that placement is traditionally said to mean). The position can be calculated from birth data; the descriptive meanings belong to the Vedic astrological tradition and should be read as cultural and interpretive, not as guaranteed personality outcomes.

What If I Don't Know My Exact Birth Time?
If you check "I don't know my birth time" in the calculator, the tool uses an estimated local time—12:00 PM (noon) civil time on your birth date, per the current implementation. That estimate can still often identify the same Chandra Rashi when the Moon was far from a boundary, but results near a sign transition should be treated with caution.
Nakshatra and Pada need more reliable timing than Rashi alone. A full Ascendant and house chart needs a much more dependable birth time. When possible, use a birth certificate, hospital record, or family memory narrowed to a morning/evening window. For a step-by-step guide, see Moon Sign without exact birth time and Moon Sign by birth date.
Exact birth time
Best confidence for Rashi, Nakshatra, and Pada
Approximate time
Often sufficient for Rashi; use caution for Nakshatra, Pada, and boundaries
Unknown time (noon estimate)
Estimated result; review boundary warnings and confirm if the sign looks uncertain
