In Vedic astrology, Moon Sign (Chandra Rashi) and Sun Sign (Surya Rashi) are two different placements from the same birth chart. The Moon Sign is the sidereal sign the Moon occupied at your birth; the Sun Sign is the sidereal sign the Sun occupied. You can calculate your Vedic Moon Sign from your birth details without conflating it with your Sun placement.
What Each Placement Represents
Traditionally, the Sun is commonly associated with vitality, core expression, and the stable “solar” themes of identity. The Moon is commonly associated with mind, emotional processing, habits, and instinctive responses. Neither placement alone describes a whole person; Jyotish reads them together with the Ascendant and other Grahas.
How Each Is Calculated
Both use the sidereal zodiac in this project’s Vedic tools, with Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. The difference is which body’s longitude is mapped to a 30° Rashi: the Moon for Chandra Rashi, the Sun for Surya Rashi. Birth date, local time, and birthplace are used to resolve the correct birth instant.
How Fast They Move
| Placement | Changes roughly | Traditionally emphasized for |
|---|---|---|
| Moon Sign | ~2–3 days per sign | Mind, emotions, daily inner experience |
| Sun Sign | ~1 month per sign | Vitality, identity themes, solar expression |
Why Vedic Practice Often Highlights the Moon
Many Jyotish traditions give the Moon and Ascendant central weight because the Moon moves quickly and is tied to Manas (mind), while the Sun describes broader solar themes. That does not make the Sun “unimportant”—a full Vedic birth chart shows how every Graha contributes.
Western Sun Sign vs Vedic Sun Sign
Tropical Western Sun signs use a seasonal zodiac. Vedic Sun and Moon signs use the sidereal zodiac, so they can differ from popular Western sign labels. See Vedic vs Western Moon Sign for the framework difference.
