Check Mars Position

What is Mangal Dosha?

In Vedic astrology, Mangal Dosha occurs when Mars (Mangal) is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of a birth chart. Its placement in these houses can cause friction in relationships.

Notice: Base Rules Only

This calculator evaluates the fundamental Parashari rules based on House placement from the Ascendant. It does not calculate:

  • Dosha from the Moon or Venus
  • Cancellations (Neecha Mars, Mars with Jupiter, etc.)

Because base Mangal Dosha occurs in almost 50% of charts, true assessment requires a human astrologer. Do not be alarmed by a "Manglik" result here.

What is Mangal Dosha?

Mangal Dosha (also known as Kuja Dosha or Bhom Dosha) is a traditional chart consideration in Vedic astrology involving the placement of Mars (Mangal) in specific houses. Mars represents energy, drive, and assertiveness. When placed in houses related to relationships and domestic life, its natural fiery qualities can indicate potential areas of friction or intensity in partnerships.

The Placement of Mars

Traditionally, Mangal Dosha is formed when Mars is located in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Ascendant (Lagna). Some astrologers also evaluate these house placements from the Moon sign or Venus to assess the overall influence of Mars in the chart.

  • 1st House: Mars aspects the 7th house of marriage, often indicating an independent or assertive approach to partnerships.
  • 4th House: Relates to domestic life and inner peace; Mars here can bring active, sometimes restless energy to the home environment.
  • 7th House: The primary house of marriage; Mars here introduces direct, passionate energy into relationships.
  • 8th House: Relates to longevity and shared resources; Mars here can indicate intensity in deep emotional bonds.
  • 12th House: Relates to isolation and the subconscious; Mars here may indicate internal frustrations or a need for active release of hidden energy.

Why It Is Evaluated in Marriage

In Jyotish, harmony in marriage often involves balancing different temperaments. Mars naturally signifies action and independence. When a person with strong Martian energy in relationship houses marries someone without a similar energetic disposition, a mismatch in communication styles or assertiveness can occur. This is the foundation of the traditional recommendation for a Manglik to marry another Manglik—pairing two similar energetic dispositions often results in a more balanced dynamic.

A Common Chart Factor

Mangal Dosha is a very common astrological alignment. Because there are five houses that can form the dosha out of a possible twelve, nearly 50% of birth charts will have this base placement. It is simply one of many factors to consider in chart matching, not a definitive predictor of relationship success or failure.

Cancellations and Mitigations

Furthermore, traditional texts outline numerous specific conditions that cancel or significantly modify the effects of the dosha. For example:

  • If Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or its exalted sign (Capricorn).
  • If Jupiter or Venus is conjunct with or strongly aspecting Mars.
  • If the individual marries later in life (after age 28), as Martian energy is said to mature and stabilize over time.

Because of these widespread cancellations, a comprehensive chart reading by a qualified astrologer is required to evaluate whether the dosha is active, modified, or effectively canceled in your specific chart.
