About Vedic Matching

Kundali Milan is traditionally assessed using the Ashtakoota system. This system evaluates 8 specific parameters (Kootas) based primarily on the Moon Nakshatras of both partners.

The 8 Kootas

  • Varna (1 pt) - Work & Spiritual Compatibility
  • Vashya (2 pts) - Dominance & Attraction
  • Tara (3 pts) - Destiny & Health
  • Yoni (4 pts) - Intimacy & Nature
  • Graha Maitri (5 pts) - Mental & Friendship
  • Gana (6 pts) - Temperament
  • Bhakoot (7 pts) - Emotional Harmony
  • Nadi (8 pts) - Genetic & Life Force

What is Ashtakoot Guna Milan?

In traditional Vedic astrology, before a marriage is finalized, the charts of the prospective couple are matched using a sophisticated point system called Ashtakoot Guna Milan. Ashta means eight, and Koota means category or parameter. The system evaluates eight specific dimensions of compatibility between the couple, primarily focusing on the position of the Moon in their respective birth charts.

The total possible score is 36 points (Gunas). Traditionally, a minimum of 18 points is required for a marriage to be considered astrologically viable.

The 8 Kootas (Parameters)

Each of the eight Kootas carries a specific weight, increasing in importance from one to eight points. They assess different layers of the relationship:

1. Varna (1 Point) - Work and Ego

Assesses the spiritual development and ego compatibility. It checks if the couple's fundamental approach to life and work is harmonious.

2. Vashya (2 Points) - Attraction and Dominance

Evaluates the magnetic attraction, affection, and power dynamics between the couple, ensuring one partner doesn't unjustly dominate the other.

3. Tara (3 Points) - Destiny and Health

Based on the birth star (Nakshatra), this parameter checks if the couple brings each other good fortune and health, or if the union brings challenges.

4. Yoni (4 Points) - Physical and Sexual Compatibility

Measures biological compatibility, sexual affinity, and physical intimacy. Every Nakshatra is associated with an animal symbol, and the natural relationship between those animals (e.g., horse and tiger) dictates the score.

5. Graha Maitri (5 Points) - Mental Compatibility

Checks the friendship between the planetary lords of the couple's Moon signs. High points here indicate aligned thinking, mutual understanding, and intellectual camaraderie.

6. Gana (6 Points) - Temperament and Lifestyle

Classifies temperaments into Devata (divine/gentle), Manushya (human/balanced), and Rakshasa (demonic/aggressive). It ensures the couple's fundamental natures don't clash destructively.

7. Bhakoot (7 Points) - Emotional Harmony and Wealth

A highly weighted parameter that looks at the relationship between the two Moon signs. A poor score (Bhakoot Dosha) can indicate financial struggles, health issues, or a fundamental disconnect in emotional processing.

8. Nadi (8 Points) - Genetic and Life Force

The most important Koota, carrying the highest weight. Nadi translates to "pulse" or nervous energy. It evaluates physiological and genetic compatibility. A poor score (Nadi Dosha) was traditionally believed to cause issues with progeny and severe health problems for the couple.

A Crucial Warning About Points

It is a common misconception that a high score (e.g., 32/36) guarantees a perfect marriage, or that a low score guarantees divorce. Guna Milan is only a preliminary filter.

The Ashtakoot system primarily evaluates the Moon. It does not evaluate the 7th House (the house of marriage), the condition of Venus (the planet of love), or whether either partner has Mangal Dosha. For a truly comprehensive compatibility analysis, both complete birth charts must be analyzed by an astrologer.
